(all of my patterns include 1/2″ seam allowance)

Step 1

Arrange Your Fabric Scraps
Collect fabric scraps from your recent sewing projects. Start playing around with the scraps and lay them out in a collage. The overall shape of the scrap layout doesn’t matter right now, but it should be big enough for your bunny pattern to to fit on top of.
Make two collages, one for the front and one for the back of the placemat.

Step 2

Sew Your fabric scraps together
One by one sew your scrap pieces together. I usually start with smaller pieces and then add on larger pieces until the whole thing is sew together. Repeat for the other side of the placemat.

Step 3

cut out your bunny placemat
Place your bunny pattern on top of your fabric scrap collage and cut out two. Be sure the flip the pattern over for the reverse side of the placemat.

Step 4

cut out your interfacing and apply it to one side of the placemat
Cut the seam allowance off of the bunny pattern and use it to cut out your interfacing. This Heavy weight interfacing is difficult to deal with around seams, so it’s better to cut off the extra seam allowance before applying it to the placemat.

Step 5

sew the placemat front and back together
With right sides together, sew your two placemat faces together. Be sure to leave a small gap on the bottom of the placemat so that you can turn it right side out. I recommend stitching just outside of the interfacing so it will be easier to flip the fabric around the seam.

Step 6

Flip the place mat to the right side
Clip all corners and curves and then flip the placemat through the gap in the bottom. Use a pointy tool to poke out the edges, and press the placemat flat.

Step 7

sew up the gap and top stitch the placemat
Using matching thread top stitch all the way around the placemat to help the edges look nice and neat. This will also close up the gap in the bottom.

Finished!
