Tutorial: Scrap Denim Zipper Pouch
This tutorial will walk you through how to make a cute zipper pouch using small scraps of denim. It’s great for upcycling old pairs of jeans into something you can use! You can check out the free pattern below and follow along with the step-by-step instructions.
Note: When sewing through layers of denim, I generally recommend using a jeans or heavy weight needle with your sewing machine to make it sure the needle won’t break while trying to sew through the thick layers.

Supplies Needed:
(all of my patterns include 1/2″ seam allowance)

Step 1

Sew pieces 1,2, and 3 together
Following the design key, sew pieces 1,2, and 3 together on the diagonal with right sides together.
Step 2

Add pieces 4 and 5
With right sides together, sew 4 and 5 to the design according to the key.

Step 3

Add piece 6 at the top
Sew piece 6 to the upper edge of the pouch design with right sides together.

Step 4

Repeat steps 1-3 for the second half of the pouch
You will need to sew this side in a mirror reflection of the design.
Step 5

sew the zipper to one side of the bag
With the zipper face down, sew it to the upper edge of the bag. Once sewn, press the zipper up and away from the pouch.

Step 6

sew the zipper to the other side of the bag
Place the zipper and pouch face down on the second side of the bag and sew along the upper edge. Once sewn, press the bag away from the zipper so that it is sandwiched between the two sides of the pouch.

Step 7

add a belt loop to the pouch
Using a seam ripper, remove a belt loop from an old pair of jeans. Fold it in half and baste it on one side of the pouch near the zipper.

Step 8

sew the two sides of the pouch together
Line up the two sides of the pouch with right sides together and stitch around the sides and bottom. Before stitching, open the zipper halfway.

Step 9

turn the bag to the right side through the zipper
Flip the bag to right-side out through the half open zipper. Then press the seams to help it sit flat.
Finished!
