Tutorial: Zipper Fanny Pack Hip Pouch
Learn how to make a cute zipper hip pouch that can also double as a belt. This is great for traveling or for spending the day at a theme park or Renn Faire. This hip purse has two zipper sections that you can use for storing your essentials and making sure they don’t get lost. Print out the pattern below, and follow along with the tutorial.
Supplies Needed:

(all of my patterns include 1/2″ seam allowance)

Step 1

sew the zipper to the upper back
Place the 9″ zipper face down on the upper bag back and sew along the edge. Then press the zipper away from the fabric.

Step 2

sew the zipper to the lower back
Place the zipper and upper back face down on the lower back and sew along the edge. Then press the zipper away so that it is now sandwiched between the upper and lower back pieces.

Step 3

baste the zipper back to the bag back
Stack the zipper back piece on top of the bag back so the wrong side of the zipper piece is on top of the right side of the bag. Then baste them together around the perimeter.

Step 4

baste the strap to the sides of the back
Baste the belting or strap to the sides of the bag right around the zipper.

Step 5

sew the zipper to one side of the zipper band
Place the 13″ zipper face down on one zipper band piece and sew it in place. Then press the zipper away from the fabric.

Step 6

sew the zipper to the other side of the zipper band
Repeat the previous step with the other side of the zipper band.

Step 7

sew the lower band to the zipper band
With right sides together, sew the lower band to the zipper band along the narrow edges to create a loop.

Step 8

sew the band to the front and back of the bag
Open the zipper part way and sew the zipper band to the front and back of the bag with right sides together. The strap will be on the inside of the bag.

Step 9

turn the bag to the right side
Turn the bag to the right side through the zipper.
Step 10

add the slider and buckle to the belting
On both strap pieces, add a slider and one side of the buckle.
- Add the slider onto the strap
- Add the buckle to the strap
- Bring the strap around through the bottom of the slider again
- Sew the tail of the strap to keep it fixed around the slider
This will allow you to adjust the size of the belt on your hip bag.
