Tutorial: How to Make a Butterfly Hair Clip (in 10 minutes)
This tutorial will show you how to make an easy butterfly hair clip using some leftover lightweight fabric scraps. It’s a quick tutorial that you can easily accomplish in 10 minutes. I’ve also included a free pattern you can use to follow along with the step-by-step instructions. If you don’t want a hair clip, the butterfly can easily be attached to a headband, brooch, bag, or be used as a cute decoration anywhere you like.

Supplies Needed:
all of my patterns include 1/2″ seam allowance
Step 1

sew the front and back pieces together
When sewing together, be sure to leave a gap so you can turn it to the right side. This step is to prevent the edges of the butterfly from fraying, if you are using a fabric that does not fray, you can skip this step and use just one layer.
After you sew it, turn the fabric to the right side and press it flat.

Step 2

arrange the top and bottom of the butterfly and stitch down the center
Hand sew a long basting stitch connecting the center of the bottom and top butterfly, gathering the fabric along the way.

Step 3

wrap the thread around the center
After gathering, wrap the thread tail around the center 10 to 15 times and tie off the thread.

Step 4

Glue the butterfly to a hair clip
Hot glue is usually the best type of adhesive for this.

Finished!
