Tutorial: How to Make a Round Pillow With Leftover Scraps
If you have a bunch of random scraps, you can use them to create a truly unique pillow. In this tutorial I’ll go over the steps I use to create a round pillowcase without using any kind of color blocking pattern.
Supplies Needed:
Step 1

Make a circle for your pillow
You can download the pdf I made with a 5″ circle, or make your own. You can trace a bowl, or measure out the circle with a ruler. Don’t forget to add seam allowance.

Step 2

make the side strip of the pillow
If you want a side to your round pillow, you can make a rectangle based on the circumference. You can either use the formula: Circumference = Ï€d (so that would be 3.14 multiplied by the diameter of the circle). Or you can simply measure the way around the circle if you don’t want to think about math.
Then make a rectangle with that length (or half the length and cut two)
Step 3

arrange your fabric scraps and cut straight edges
Take your pile of scraps and get creating arranging them. It helps to make sure all the pieces have straight edges on the inside (where they will be sewn together). Make sure your scrap design is big enough for the pillow face.
Step 4

sew your scraps together and press seams
One by one, sew your scrap pieces together and press the seams open on the back to make the front face flat.
Step 5

cut out your circle pattern
Repeat the process for the second side of the pillow
Step 6

cut out your side pillow piece and sew into a loop
Cut out 2 fabric pieces for your side pillow and sew them together at both ends to create a loop.

Step 7

sew loop around the pillow
Sew the loop to the pillow. Since this is a curve, you will have to ease the loop on slightly because it will seem like the pillow face is bigger than the outer rectangle.
Sew the second pillow face to the loop, but leave a small gap so you can turn the pillow right side out.
Step 8

turn right side out and Stuff the pillow
I chose to use leftover fabric scraps for my stuffing, to reduce waste for my sewing hobby. However, you can use whatever kind of stuffing you want (it takes a lot of scraps to fill a pillow)
Step 9

sew up the gap
You can hand sew the gap with an invisible stitch if you want to. Or if you’re lazy like me, you can also machine sew it (It will be slightly visible, but not that bad)
Enjoy your finished pillow!
