Tutorial: How to Sew a Padded Case for Sunglasses
My sunglasses case just broke, split straight down the spine. But no worries! It just gives me the excuse to make this cute new case for my sunglasses. I only work with fabric, but of course I still want my sunglasses to be protected, so I designed a quick padded case so that I can bring my sunglasses along without worrying about breaking them. This quick tutorial uses some leftover remnants of fabric and batting to make your own glasses case. Download the free pattern below and follow along with the instructions.

Supplies Needed:

(all of my patterns include 1/2″ seam allowance)

Step 1

layer case fabric, interfacing, and batting
On the reverse side of the case piece, layer the interfacing and then the batting. Sew around the perimeter to sew everything together. From here on we’ll treat this as one piece.
Step 2

fold case in half and sew the side and bottom
With right sides together, fold the case in half and sew. Leave the top edge open.
Step 3

turn case to right side
Clip the corners and then turn the case to the right side. Use a long point tool (like a chopstick or pencil) and poke out the corners of the case.

Step 4

sew elastic to the short side of the top
cut 4 inches of elastic and fold it in half. Baste it to the short side of the top piece
Step 5

sew top and lining together
With right sides together, sew the lining to the top, sandwiching the elastic in between the layers. Sew only the sides and bottom, leaving the top open.
Step 6

turn top to right side
Clip all of the corners and trip the seams to reduce bulk. Then turn the top to the right side and poke out the corners.

Step 7

sew top to the back of the case
With right sides together, sew the top of the top to the back of the pencil case.

Step 8

fold the lining in half and sew the side and bottom
After sewing, trim the corners and seam allowance to reduce bulk.

Step 9

place case inside the lining and sew the upper edge
Place the case inside the case lining with right sides together. Line up the seam of both pieces, then sew around the upper edge. Be sure to leave a small gap in the top so you can turn it to the right side.

Step 10

turn to the right side and sew up the gap
Step 11

add the button to the case
Test where the elastic hits and sew a button to that spot so you can close the case.

Finished!
