Tutorial: How to Make a No-Sew Braided Scarf with Fleece Scraps
I’ve been making a bunch of fleece scarves lately, and ended up with lots of long pieces of fleece cuttings. As much as possible, I try not to waste fabric, so I thought why not try to make a braided scarf with all of these long pieces. I’ll walk you through how to braid the scarf together. This is a great winter project for kids, since there is no sewing machine required, it’s all braids and knots.
Supplies Needed:
Step 1

braid the right-most strand to the center
Cover one end of all 9 strands with something heavy, like a book. You want about 4-5 inches to be covered.
Then take the strand on the far right and bring it over top of one strand, then under the next one. Then you’ll bring it over the third, and under the fourth. Now your strand should be in the center of the scarf.
Step 2

Braid the left-most strand to the center
Now you want to take the far left strand and repeat the process. Bring it over one, then under the next. Then you’ll bring it over the third, and under the fourth. So now the far left strand is sitting in the center.
Repeat this process over and over again, alternating between the strand that’s on the far right then far left.
Note: This tutorial uses 9 strand to braid. However, the same pattern can be done with any odd number of strands. Just go over and under until you reach the center, then move to the other side and repeat.

Step 3

Tie the ends of the scarf
Once you’ve reached the end of the scarf, you’ll need to tie it to secure the braid. Tie each strand to the ones that are next to it. Do this on both sides of the scarf.

Finished!
