Tutorial: How to Make a Ruffle ‘Flower’ Purse
This tutorial will teach you how to make a cute ruffle purse that resembles a flower. I chose my fabric to make the purse look like a sunflower, but you can be as creative as you want when deciding what kind of flower your purse should look like. I also made the pattern (free download below) so that it will use only 1/4 yard remnants of fabric. So if you have a short length of material leftover from another project you can easily use it for this cute purse.

Supplies Needed:
(Note: I include links to sewing supplies and notions that I used. However, I always hope that if you have similar leftover supplies from other projects, you will use those before buying new)

all of my patterns include 1/2″ seam allowance

Step 1

Apply interfacing to front and back pieces
You can use sew in or fusible interfacing, whichever you prefer.

Step 2

sew the darts in the bag pieces
With right sides together, sew the darts in the bottom of the bag pieces. This gives dimension to the bag when it’s finished.

Step 3

sew the two ruffle pieces together in the center
Press the seam open.

Step 4

hem both ends of the ruffle
Double fold hem the ruffle pieces to prevent them from fraying.

Step 5

fold the ruffle in half and sew a long basting stitch along the length
Use the longest basting stitch on your machine along the entire length of the ruffle (or hand sew a basting stitch)

Step 6

Pull the thread to gather the ruffle
Pull at the thread on one end of the ruffle to gather the whole length of it.

Step 7

baste the ruffle to the front of the bag
Leave space for the seam allowance at the top of the bag, don’t sew the ruffle all the way to the top edge.
Step 8

sew the front and back bag together
Sandwich the ruffle between the front and back bag and sew through all layers.
Step 9

Turn the bag to the right side
Press the seam and remove any visible basting stitches
Step 10

sew the strap to the upper edge of the bag
You’ll want to baste it to opposite sides of the bag so that it will be easier to wear the bag crossbody.

Step 11

hem all sides of the inner pocket
Step 12

sew the pocket to the lining
Step 13

Sew the darts in the lining
Same as step 2 for the bag.
Step 14

Sew front and back lining together
Step 15

place the bag inside the lining and sew along the upper edge
With right sides together, sew the bag to the lining along the top. Be sure you don’t catch the ruffle in the stitches along the seam. You also want to leave a small gap in the top for turning to the right side.
Step 16

Turn the bag to the right side
Step 17

top stitch the upper edge of the bag
This will give the top a neater finish and close up the gap.

Finished!
