Tutorial: “Woven” Fabric Pillow with Only Scraps
This tutorial will walk you through how to create a unique pillow using leftover fabric scraps. The idea is to weave the fabric scraps together to create the front face of the pillow as a chance to get a fun piece of home decor that is also sustainable. You can print out the pattern for this, or cut out your square and rectangles using the measurements.

Supplies Needed:
(all of my patterns include 1/2″ seam allowance)

Step 1

fold the strips in half and sew down the length
with right sides together, fold each strip in half and sew down the length.

Step 2

press the seam allowance open on the back
Press the seam allowance so that it’s open on the back of each of your strips

Step 3

turn the strips to the right side
turn the strips to the right side. This can take a while, so be patient.

Step 4

separate into two groups of ten
Step 5

lay out the groups and baste them to scraps of fabric
Lay your strips side by side in the two groups. Then use any random scrap of fabric and baste the strips to it (for both groups). This just helps to keep one end of the strips in place while you weave the pillow.
Step 6

arrange the groups perpendicular to each other
Step 7
weave the pillow
Lift every other strip from group 1. Place the first strip from group 2 over top.

Bring the lifted strips down for group 1, then bring the other five strips up.

Lay the second strip from group 2 down.

Repeat the process for the whole pillow (if you’re confused, follow the pictures to help)

Step 8

remove the scraps of fabric
remove the basting stitches and take away those random scraps that were holding down the ends.
Step 9

sew the backing
with right sides together, sew the backing around the perimeter. Leave a gap at one point so that you can turn it to the right side.

Step 10

turn the pillow to the right side through the gap
Step 11

stuff the pillow
I like to use leftover fabric scraps that are too small for anything else, but you can stuff your pillow with whatever you want.
Step 12

sew up the gap
Hand sew the gap closed after you finish stuffing the pillow.
Finished!
