Tutorial: Drawstring Gift Sack with Fabric Scraps
This tutorial will show you how to upcycle your leftover fabric scraps to create a drawstring gift sack to wrap presents in. This specific tutorial was made with Christmas-themed fabric, but you can easily use your fabric scraps to make something similar for birthdays and other gift-giving occasions. Just collect your fabric scraps, download the free pattern below and get started.
Supplies Needed:
(all of my patterns include 1/2″ seam allowance)

Step 1

Arrange your fabric scraps
Lay out your fabric scraps and start lining them up however you like. Make sure the scrap collage is long enough for the pattern to fit. Remember to overlap the fabric pieces to account for seam allowance.
Step 2

sew your scraps together
One-by-one sew each of the scrap pieces together. Make sure to press each of the seams as you go.
Step 3

cut out your pattern
Overlay your gift sack pattern on top of the collage. Then cut it out (you can use scissors if you want, I just find it easier to use a rotary cutter).

Step 4

fold the bag in half and sew
with right sides together, fold the gift sack in half and sew along the side and bottom. Leave a gap between the dotted lines indicated on the pattern. This will be where we add the drawstring later.

Step 5

sew the base corners
Flatten the corners of the base to form little triangles and sew one inch from the edge. This will give the gift sack a little bit of dimension.

Step 6

fold over 3 inches and sew
On the inside, fold over 3 inches on the top of the bag. Then sew along the two dotted lines on the pattern to form a casing. The lines of stitches should fall along the top and bottom of the gap in the seam that was created earlier.

Step 7

add the drawstring
Thread a piece of string or rope through the casing to finish the bag.
Finished!
