Tutorial: Easy Flannel Poncho with 1-Yard of Fabric
This is a super simple tutorial that will walk you through step-by-step how to make a basic poncho with only 1 yard of fabric. It works best with something cozy, such as flannel, but can be made with a wide variety of medium-weight fabrics. I included a free pattern you can download below if you want, but you can also just ignore the pattern and work with one hard of fabric. Just cut it into two pieces along the fold to get started.

Supplies Needed:
(all of my patterns include 1/2″ seam allowance)

Step 1

Sew two sides of the poncho
With right sides together, sew the poncho along to adjacent edges. Leave 10 inches unsewn on the corner where the two edges meet. This will be the neckline.

Step 2

optional: make felled seams
For a more finished look, turn the seam allowance under to create a felled seam. Think of this like hemming a the seam allowance so the raw edges don’t show.
Fold the seam allowance underneath itself and sew it in place right along the edge for a nice neat finish.

Step 3

Hem the neck flap triangles
Clip the seam allowance next to the sewn seams and hem the triangles along the neckline to prevent fraying.

Step 4

Hem the poncho
Hem the bottom edge of the poncho. I you like the selvedge edge on your poncho, you do not need to hem this part. My fabric have a mini fringe on it along this edge. I like the look of it so I kept it in place.

Finished!
