Tutorial: How to Make a Fleece Scarf With a Hidden Zipper Pocket
This tutorial will teach you how to make a fabric scarf with a hidden pocket at the end (you can add a second pocket if you want to). I measured the pattern so you can make this with just half a yard of leftover material or fabric remnants (60″ wide). I used fleece for the scarf, but it will work well with many types of material as well (such as flannel).

Supplies Needed:

Step 1

place the zipper face down on the right side of the scarf
Place the zipper with the top on the dot. The bottom of the zipper will extend beyond the lower dot, but only sew between the dots. Let the tail of the zipper hang free for the last 1-2 inches. Open the zipper before sewing.
Note: I recommend using an invisible zipper foot for this. It makes it a lot easier to sew close to the zipper teeth.
Step 2

Fold the scarf in half and repeat step 1 on the other side of the scarf
Make sure the zipper is face down with teeth facing inward on the right-side of the fabric.
Step 3

Sew the scarf with right-sides together
Sew along the long and short edges of the scarf, except for the zipper area between the two dots. You also want to leave a small gap somewhere in the center of the scarf for turning later.

Step 4

Sew one side of the pocket
Line up the dots on the pocket with the dots on the scarf. Pin it to the seam over top of the zipper and sew (tip: use a zipper foot with your sewing machine). The scarf is still inside out for this part.
Step 5

Sew the other side of the pocket
Repeat the process, lining up the other side of the pocket and pinning it to the seam on the other side of the zipper. Once sewn, the pocket pieces should look like the image below.

Step 6

sew the pocket
Line the pocket up one on top of the other and sew around the outside to finish the pocket.
Step 7

turn the scarf right side out
Using the gap in the center of the scarf, turn it out. You can test the zipper to make sure it’s working properly, then press the seams and sew up the gap.

Finished!
