Tutorial: Large Cat Head Purse With Crossbody Strap
Learn how to make a cute crossbody cat purse that is shaped like a cat’s head. This tutorial will teach you how to make a large tote bag with a clip on strap and a simple lining. It’s big enough to keep all of your daily essentials. This tutorial is not too difficult, It’s great for a determined beginner to try out. Simply download the free pattern and cut out your fabric to get started.

Supplies Needed:

(all of my patterns include 1/2″ seam allowance)

Step 1

Apply interfacing to front, back, and one of the flap pieces
You can use sew in or fusible interfacing, whichever you prefer.

Step 2

Sew darts in front and back
With right sides together, sew the darts in the bottom of the front and back bag pieces. This gives dimension to the bag when it’s finished.

Step 3

Sew the two sets of tab pieces
With right sides together, sew along the length of the two sets of tab pieces. Then turn them to the right side and press.

Step 4

Baste the tabs to the front
Baste the tabs to the front bag piece near the base of the ears.

Step 5

sew the front and back of the bag
With right sides together, sew the front and back of the cat bag up to the tips of the ears. Leave the top open.
Step 6

turn the bag to the right side
Step 7

sew the flap pieces together
With right sides together, sew the two flap pieces. Leave the top open.
Step 8

turn the flap to the right side
Clip the curves, and turn the flap right side out through the hole in the top and press. You can topstitch along the edge for a neater finish if desired.

Step 9

baste the flap to the back of the bag
Line the flap up with the flat edge at the top of the bag and baste it in place.

Step 10

sew darts in the lining

Step 11

sew the front and back of lining together
with right sides together, sew the lining front and back. Leave a gap in the base of the lining.
Step 12

Place bag inside lining and sew upper edge
With right sides together, place your cat bag inside the lining layer. Line up the top edge and stitch.

Step 13

clip corners and turn bag to right side
Clip the the corners at the base of the ear as close to the stitching as you can get. Then turn the bag to the right side through the gap in the base of the lining.


Step 14

sew the lining
Fold the lining gap together and sew up the gap in the base using a hand stitch.
Step 15

Place the lining inside the bag and topstitch
Arrange the lining inside the bag, press it and topstitch all along the edge for a neat finish.
Step 16

sew along the length of the strap pieces
With right sides together, sew the two strap pieces along the length.
Step 17

Turn the strap to the right side and press
It’s useful to use a loop turner or similar tool to help if you’re struggling to turn the strap out. You can also edgestitch the strap if you desire.
Step 18

add clips to both ends of the strap
Fold the fabric over the clips and sew in place. Then all you have to do is clip the strap to the tabs on the cat bag and you’re finished.
